September 2018 myself, my brother and parents decided to celebrate my mas big birthday in San Fran. It is a perfect half way point between Dublin and NZ. 6 nights gave us plenty of time to discover and relax but would definitely go back for more!!!
Fishermans Wharf Holiday Inn
We hired a Jeep at the Airport and made our way to Fishermans Wharf to stay at the Holiday Inn. Fishermans Wharf is a lively tourist area with restaurants, bars, souvenirs shops and Seafood stalls to die for and lots more. It is also where you start your Cruises to the Golden Gate Bridge or Alcatraz. The hotel was the perfect location and clean, tidy rooms.
Where do I start. This was definitely a Bucket List item for me. You need to pre-book Alcatraz in advance. It usually books out, weeks sometimes even months in advance, so do not wait until you arrive. We booked the evening Cruise so we set off at 5.55pm. As we sailed away from the Wharf the View of San Fran Skyline was fantastic. When we arrived at Alcatraz about 200 were separated into 4 groups and given a guide to get us started. The audio tour covers the inside of the cellhouse (at the top of the island) during the penitentiary era (1934 - 1963). and had real life commentary from Guards and Inmates which really got me into the whole experience. The dark history to Alcatraz gives you a chill but once you walk outside and see the view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the city at sunset you find it hard to believe you are seeing it from an infamous prison!
