Premium Economy Air NZ
I was very lucky to get an upgrade to Premium Economy with Air NZ. The seats were in my opinion very spacious, comfortable and the leg rest just made it a lot easier to sleep. I think it is worth getting a price for Premium when you are looking to travel long haul with Air NZ. Their Specials can be surprisingly affordable.
Napa Valley Self Drive
On the 3rd day we hopped in our car and drove to Napa via Bodega Bay. It’s a really nice drive and very much re minded me of parts of Central Otago with Vineyards everywhere. We checked into the Wine Valley Lodge ‘
“Built in 1953 and originally named Casa Lual after the first owner's daughter Lucille and husband Allen, the Lodge played a role in Hollywood movie making. In 1959, Hollywood arrived in Napa to begin filming "This Earth is Mine" starring Rock Hudson, Jean Simmons, Cindy Robins and Claude Rains. Many people in Napa were excited and some people even got parts as extras in the movie”
We loved staying here and my ma and da loved the fact that we got the Marilyn Monroe Room. The rooms were really nice and the best beds. Napa is a nice town with a riverfront Promenade full of shops and restaurants.
On my ma’s birthday we decided to visit the Castello di Amorosa Vineyard. A very busy place but beautiful setting in an 13th-century–style winery offering guided tours of the castle & tastings of Italian-inspired wines. After our wine tasting we heading back to Napa via Sonoma. Sonoma is absolutely beautiful old historical town. It's known for its art galleries and the colonial-era Sonoma Plaza.
We drove back over the Golden Gate Bridge back to San Fran and stayed at the Handlery Union Square. This hotel is an awesome location right downtown. Its got very modern rooms in an old building. It has an awesome pool so to guarantee a poolside room you would need to book the Superior for only a little extra.
San Francisco is one of the best cities I have been. The people are amazing and getting around is so easy. We walked to Chinatown and was told about a Fortune Cookie Factory down a small alley where you can watch your personalised fortune cookie being made for $1.50 and it comes in a little gift box. Great for friends and family as a quirky gift!
You cannot visit San Francisco without a ride on the Trams. We jumped on at the start and headed back to Fishermans Wharf. A round trip is only $14 and it’s a nice way to see the hilly streets of the city. We also drove down Lombard street the wiggliest street in the world which was fun.
For food I recommend Lori’s Diner. Lori’s Diner was opened in 1986. Open 24 hours, it features counter service, all day breakfast, sparkling red booths, rock n roll, and Coca-Cola, Elvis and Marilyn Monroe memorabilia. We had a breakfast and a lunch there and it suited everyones hunger.
