Having travelled to Bangkok on several occasions I am guaranteed to frequent the same haunts but I also surprise myself at the new things I discover every time I go.
Travelling around the city by Tuk Tuk is a standout favourite, ripping down side streets, wind blasting in your face, darting between other cars and entering Malls through quiet back alleys just adds to the excitement of the trip. Just make sure you are clear with your driver about your destination before you jump in and agree to pay the fare.
MBK shopping centre is my go to for cheap T-Shirts and DVD's. The top floor is usually where the best bargains are to be had. And just because it is a shopping mall is doesn't mean you can't haggle on the price - I ALWAYS do and especially if I am buying in bulk. For a bit of night market fun and atmosphere I like to head out after dinner to the Patpong Night Markets. Although this is quite busy and relatively safe, I probably would be so keen to take the kids there after dark and as some of the surroundings bars (and signage) are a little X Rated !
River Kwai - We have often taken a trip up the river kwai during our visits to Bangkok and visited the Bridge Over the River Kwai. The most memorable trip was when we travelled up the river by long boat and stayed overnight on the Jungle Rafts. This overnight trip is an absolute must for every traveller, to experience the real Thai culture out of the Urban Jungle. You also get the opportunity to eat more authentic Thai food, ride elephants and visit Hellfire Pass.
Back in Bangkok, my favourite hotel is the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers. Every room has a river view. The restaurant is superb and the staff are delightful at every turn. The bath robes supplied in the room are not for the children but that didn't stop my son from lapping up the comfort and the view with a fancy hot chocolate in hand ! The hotel is also only a 2 minute walk from the Pier to get onboard a river cruise. The Evening cruise includes a lovely buffet dinner and an amusing "lady boy" show along with great sights of the city lights.
